Formigine Medieval Castle

Piazza Calcagnini 1
Formigine (Modena)

According to tradition, the castle was built in the XIII century: recent researches, made by Sauro Gelichi (Cà Foscari University, Venice), dated the original core of the fortified village back to the X century. In the XIV century the village was abandoned: traces remains in the archeological site close to the castle, where there still are the ruins of the medieval graveyard and of the church. After some archeological transformations under the governments od Adelardi and Azzo da Castello, in 1405, Marco I Pio became the owner and gave the current form to the castle. Since 2007,  the castle hosts  the multimedia Museum, with installations by Studio Azzurro and a research center.
